hook: double progression zig zag to short wave, to hey
by: Shannon Horst
formation: Becket ccw
This dance is intended to be intermediate-advanced depending on your community. Please take care in teaching the A2, notes below. Based on Winter in Summerland by Jeff Spero and James Hutson. Written at American Week 2024 with the prompt "Write a dance without any allemandes"
A1 | 8 | long lines forward & back
|
8 | ladles chain
| |
A2 | 8 | circle right 4 places
|
8 | zig right zag left (as gentlespoons start the zig out, roll away partners so gentlespoon is on the left coming into the next move) ⁋
| |
B1 | 8 | next neighbors do si do once and a 1/4
|
4 | form an ocean wave & balance - ladles by left hands and neighbors by right hands forward and back
| |
2 | pass through, walk forward to new neighbors ⁋
| |
2 | next neighbors pass by right shoulders (across the set, to set up a half hey)
| |
B2 | 8 | gentlespoons start a half hey - lefts in center, rights on ends - ladles ricochet (ladles ricochet when they meet to their partner on their home side)
|
8 | partners swing
|
A2 notes: testing dancers reported different preferences for who rolled away who depending on when the roll away was being initiated. My recommendation is to clarify to start the rollaway on the zig out, so the roll away ends and the change in direction/momentum happens at the same time. Or, if you have a crowd that has experienced dancers you can tell them to try both ways and see what they prefer.
End Effects: I believe that as long as dancers are always entering the next move with the Gentlespoon on the left and Ladle on the right everything should be fine. (Incoming dancers, if waiting out with Gentlespoon on the left and Ladle on the right should not do the A2 roll away because they are already in position)
