Superballin'

by: Jack Laurel

introduces moves: long lines, pull by dancers, custom, petronella

formation: Becket

In the A part, cue which hand early and often: i.e. "ladles right hand balance", "new neighbor left to left" etc.

For the gentlespoons balance & pull by, you may want to remind them that it's with NEW neighbor gentlespoons. It may also help to tell them not to switch their neighbor ladle to their right hand after the swap the flea, i.e. by telling them not to let go with their left hand before they reach across with the right.

"Swap the flea" isn't a typo, I just like it better.

A1 8
long lines forward & back
8
ladles balance & pull by right, face a new neighbor (gentlespoons look left) ⁋
A2 8
neighbor left hand balance & swap the flea
8
gentlespoons balance & pull by right, turn back in
B1 16
balance & petronella x2
B2 16
partners balance & swing

Written because Julie Bennett was playing with Natterjack and I wanted to fucking bounce.

More specifically, written because I went looking for a beginner-friendly dance with B1 petronellas and B2 partner long swing that didn't involve a right and left through, a promenade, or Abject Fuckery, and then I had such a hard time finding one that I tried to write it myself, and then I went completely fucking insane because it turns out it is harder to fit B1 petronellas into a dance than it has absolutely any right to be. And then the next day I had given up and was trying to find something else to call and this dance fell fully formed into my head.

Notice that the two twirls to swap are done with different hands. This is intentional. The California twirl and reach back to a cloverleaf is inspired, primarily, by several Rick Mohr dances which do the same thing.

The name is a result of a remarkable confluence of events. A friend of mine from Wisconsin, Ceara Herndon, was visiting her sister in Vermont. She sent me a picture of a firepit captioned with the title, which seemed like a good name for a dance. As it turns out, the state flower of Vermont is the Red Clover, which I only learned AFTER writing the dance. On top of all this, there's an old, hitherto unpublished dance of mine called "Fire Flower," which also contains a California twirl and reach back to a cloverleaf.

Heart of Glass

2

Cary Ravitz notes: This dance is an easier version of Through the Looking Glass, or you
might see it as Amy Kahn's Sweet Music with a different progression,
or Steve Zakon-Anderson's Twirling at the Alter with the progression
moved from the hey to the circle, or David Zinkin's Becky's Becket
with a different A2.
